Push Room Tone into Pro Tools with Ambitura
How Ambitura lays scene-matched room tone onto two Pro Tools tracks, with the session rate, PTSL, and AAF fallback.
A room-tone pass in Pro Tools usually starts as a blank stereo track and a stack of markers. Ambitura is built to hand you the tracks already filled, from a picture you analysed in the app.
Ambitura is a desktop application for Windows and macOS, not a plugin inside the session. You open the picture there, review the scenes, then push or export. The Ambitura guide is the current list of targets. This note is the Pro Tools path.
What has to be open
Push talks to a session that is already up.
- Open Pro Tools 2022.12 or newer.
- Turn on live integration in the Pro Tools setup.
- Open or create a session at the same frame rate and start timecode as the picture.
- In Ambitura, set the frame rate if the detected rate does not match that session.
Scene detection itself does not need Pro Tools. The workstation only matters at export. If the push fails, confirm the session is open and the live-integration step is on, then push again.
What lands in the session
The push creates two stereo tracks, AMB-A and AMB-B. Scenes alternate between them so neighbours never share a track. You can slip one scene without dragging the next one, and the crossfades stay intact.
- Crossfades land on the boundaries.
- A scene longer than its file also gets a loop crossfade.
- Each clip keeps a handle before the source in-point, so you can pull the tone earlier without importing again.
The tone comes from folders you added under Library → Manage Libraries. Matching prefers the closest folder for interior or exterior, time of day, and location, then a broader file in the same library if it has to. On a scene you can preview alternatives and lock the file you want. The files stay on that computer.
If you would rather carry a file
Export as AAF writes a file for File → Import → Session Data. Use that when the session is on another machine, or when you want the pass in a handoff instead of a live push.
Local pass, then cloud if you need it
A local analysis does not spend credits and does not upload the picture. It works offline after you have signed in. The app is a subscription. Solo is $20 a month and includes unlimited local analysis plus 100 cloud credits. Studio is $50 and 750 credits. Enterprise is $100 and 1500 credits.
Cloud passes are optional. The app shows the credit cost before you confirm.
| Pass | What you get |
|---|---|
| Classify | Interior or exterior, time of day, shot type, scene boundaries |
| Classify + Locate | Classify, plus a location category and a name |
| Full Ambiance Design | Classify + Locate, plus a match from your library |
Full Ambiance Design is the pass that belongs with a Pro Tools tone layback. Classify is enough when you only want boundaries and labels, and you will pick the files yourself.
A short review before you push
With Review Mode on, an uncertain boundary can show the last frame before the cut and the first frame after. Move a marker, add one, or rename it. A marker you add teaches the local learning on that computer. Logos, titles, and end credits can be tagged so they do not receive room tone.
Then push. The two ambience tracks are a starting lay, not a locked predub. Trim the handles, swap a locked file, and move on to dialogue.
